The Rise Of The Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration

The Rise Of The Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration

Remember Lara Croft? That super-athletic, puzzle-solving adventurer who pretty much invented the concept of a video game hero with a ponytail? Well, she’s been around for a long time. Like, longer than some of your favorite memes. We’re talking about the big 2-0. That’s right, Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't just a game; it's practically a veteran. And to celebrate, they did a whole “20 Year Celebration” thing. Pretty cool, right?

Now, here’s where I might get a little… controversial. Or maybe just honest. While the game itself is undeniably awesome, this "20 Year Celebration" felt a bit like when you're at a party and someone brings out the slightly-stale cake. Still edible, still technically a celebration, but maybe not quite the showstopper you were hoping for. Don't get me wrong, I love Lara. I’ve spent countless hours guiding her through ancient ruins and dodging falling boulders. But a whole celebration?

Think about it. Twenty years. That’s a lot of pixelated adventuring. You’d expect something… monumental. Something that screams, "Wow, we’ve really made it!" Instead, we got some extra bits and pieces. A few new outfits, some fancy modes, and a story expansion. It's like getting a slightly bigger present than usual, but not the one you secretly wished for under the tree.

My personal favorite part of the "celebration" was probably the Blood Ties story. It was a nice little return to Lara’s roots, focusing on her family home. It felt more personal, more in line with the earlier games. It was a good reminder of why we fell in love with her in the first place. Plus, exploring Croft Manor? Always a win.

Then there was Endurance Mode. This was… intense. You had to scavenge for resources, fight off the elements, and generally try not to freeze to death or get eaten by a bear. It was a fun challenge, a good test of your survival skills. But was it a "20 Year Celebration" kind of feature? Maybe for the hardcore survival fans. For me, it was more of a “wow, this is difficult” experience than a nostalgic trip.

And let's not forget the new outfits. Now, I’m not saying I don’t appreciate a stylish Lara. She always looks good, even covered in mud and blood. But a new outfit is… well, it’s a new outfit. It’s not exactly groundbreaking. It’s like getting a new tie for your birthday when you were hoping for a whole new suit. Nice, but a little underwhelming.

The multiplayer additions were also part of the package. Being able to team up with friends for co-op raids was pretty neat. It added another layer of gameplay for those who enjoy playing with others. But again, is this the pinnacle of a 20-year anniversary? I’m not so sure.

What I really wanted, and maybe this is my unpopular opinion, was a truly epic retrospective. Imagine a playable museum of all the Tomb Raider games. Or a documentary that delved deep into the creation and evolution of Lara Croft. Something that truly honored the legacy. Something that made you feel the weight of those two decades.

Instead, it felt like a very well-made game with some excellent DLC thrown in to mark the occasion. Which, to be fair, is still pretty good value. It’s just that the word “celebration” implies something a bit more… celebratory. Like a party with confetti and a giant cake that’s actually not stale.

I mean, we're talking about Tomb Raider here! This is a franchise that has defined adventure games for generations. It’s given us iconic moments, memorable characters, and a whole lot of fun. Surely, a 20th anniversary deserves more than just a few extra goodies tacked onto an already fantastic game?

It's like if your favorite band released a "20th Anniversary Album" and it was just their greatest hits with one new song. You'd be happy, sure, but you'd also be thinking, "Is that it?" Where's the extended edition? Where's the live album from their first concert? Where's the interview with the original band members reminiscing about those early days?

The Rise of the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration felt like that. A fantastic game, absolutely. A great addition to the Lara Croft saga, no doubt. But as a celebration of two decades? It left me wanting just a little bit more… oomph. More nostalgia, more history, more of that grand, epic feeling that Tomb Raider is supposed to evoke.

Perhaps I'm just a sentimental old gamer. Perhaps I put too much expectation on the word "celebration." But when I think of 20 years, I think of something monumental. Something that makes you pause and truly appreciate the journey. And while Rise of the Tomb Raider did a great job of offering more content, it didn't quite capture that grand retrospective feeling for me.

Still, let’s not be too harsh. The game itself is a masterpiece. Lara Croft is an enduring icon. And having more to play with her is always a good thing. The "20 Year Celebration" was more of a really nice birthday party favor than a full-blown jubilee. And sometimes, a really nice birthday party favor is perfectly fine. Especially when it comes with a healthy dose of Lara Croft.

We all love Lara Croft. She's tough, she's smart, and she can probably open a stubborn pickle jar with her bare hands. This game gave us more of her, and that's always a win in my book, even if the celebration felt a little… understated.

So, while I might have my own little gripes about the "celebration" aspect, I can't deny that Rise of the Tomb Raider is a phenomenal game. And the added content, while not entirely what I envisioned for a 20th anniversary, was still enjoyable. It just goes to show that even for legendary franchises, sometimes the biggest celebrations can be a bit… subtle.

Maybe the real celebration was just getting to play as Lara Croft for 20 years. And in that regard, we've all won. We've been on countless adventures, faced impossible odds, and always, always had Lara to guide us. That’s more than enough for any anniversary, really. Even if I still wouldn't mind a fully playable historical archive of all her escapades. Just saying.

So here's to Lara Croft, and to 20 years of epic tomb raiding. Even if the anniversary party favors were a tad less exciting than the actual gift of the game itself. Cheers to more adventures, more puzzles, and maybe, just maybe, a more extravagant anniversary next time. We’ll be waiting. And we’ll be bringing our own confetti.
